Dreamy Nightstand

The first thing you see in the morning can set the tone for the rest of the day. That’s why I was on the hunt for a beautiful dresser to rest next to my bed. I’m a little tired of matching  night stands and the ones we had previously in our master went into the guest room. I was looking for a chest of drawers with character and with the perfect height and width. We also needed extra storage so this piece pulled double duty. I hate to throw my husband under the bus, but I’m going to because he has more clothes than I do. Truth be told, the dresser is to hold his overflow! While I appreciate his green tendencies to save shirts from high school, they still take up space in both of our closets. At least now we can harbor them in style.

We found this beauty on Craigslist and I knew I had to have it. The cutest couple was getting rid of it for their move to Georgia. She bought it from a lady who sold antiques. Someone tried to paint it with a faux leather finish which gave it an interesting texture. Dark brown wasn’t in my bedroom scheme so I decided to lighten her up.

In an earlier post, I mentioned how I had been experiencing with mixing my own chalk paint. For this piece, I used a can of creamy, white paint I found on the “Oops Paint” shelf at Home Depot for $2. I mixed it with a little of the neutral paint color we had left from our basement. To make it chalky, I then added about a cup of Plaster of Paris and some water until it was the consistency I was looking for.

After two coats, sanding, clear wax and dark wax, she was starting to look just like I imagined! I think I might eventually swap out the top two drawer pulls for something fancier. Don’t you just love the key holes?

I left the top in its natural finish and color because it is beautiful wood and I love the contrast of the light and dark.

It’s the perfect place to rest my coffee cup or wake up to a sweet arrangement of flowers. Now,  I’m off to find something as sweet for Brian’s side.
